What sets this picture apart is its setting: Marines raising the flag on Mount Suribachi, the volcanic peak at the southern tip of Iwo Jima. The climb to its summit came early in the Battle of Iwo Jima, a grinding campaign of about five weeks in early 1945 that cost thousands of American lives. Images of the flag going up there were quickly seen as symbols of American resolve, and the scene still stands for the Marine Corps and the Pacific war. Look closely at the men straining with the pole, which hints at the effort it took to plant a flag on that rocky ridge.
