A Scottish clergyman's song, not an American one, is what sets this lithograph apart: its title credits the Reverend J.B. Dickson of Scotland with a "new national lyric" about the American flag. Printed around 1862, when the Civil War was tearing the United States apart, the sheet shows how the conflict drew attention and sympathy far beyond American shores. Britain's public was divided over the war, and many Scots had family ties to the United States through emigration. The firm Gilmour & Dean produced the color stone printing, and the sheet's mix of patriotic verse and illustration reflects the popular songs and ballads of the period.
