Printed in 1876, the centennial year, this chromolithograph shows the United States Capitol on the morning of July 4, with a flag raised high as the title's "one hundred years" suggests. The Declaration of Independence had been signed in 1776, so the image ties the nation's age to its most visible symbol. Color prints like this were produced in large numbers in the 1870s, when chromolithography made affordable, richly colored pictures available to ordinary households. The publisher, the National Chromo Co. of Philadelphia, was based in the city hosting the Centennial Exhibition that summer.
