Its title plays on a contrast: patriotism is not only about removing your hat for the flag but also about rolling up your sleeves to work for it. A. H. Palmer designed this color lithograph in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, and Alpha Litho. Co. of New York printed it. The record links the poster to the U.S. Army Ordnance, the branch responsible for weapons and munitions, which suggests its aim was to draw civilians into factory and industrial labor. Its subject headings on war work and economic aspects reflect how heavily the war effort depended on ordinary workers at home.
