Taken from the summit of Federal Hill, this aquatint shows Baltimore's harbor and the piers and wharves crowded with shipping along its waterfront. W.J. Bennett painted and engraved the view, and H.I. Megarey published it in New York around 1831, with the color added by hand in watercolor. Prints like this one were popular in the early 1830s because they let viewers in distant cities see the working port that made Baltimore one of the country's busiest commercial centers. The masts and wharves in the foreground show how closely the city's economy depended on the water.
