Dated April 10, 1862, this stereograph shows Baltimore Street in Cumberland, Maryland, after a snowstorm, with the buildings and street still wearing a late-season layer of white. Cumberland sat in the hills of western Maryland, a rail and road hub on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the National Road, and Union troops held the town during the Civil War. The print is an albumen positive from a wet-collodion negative, mounted as a stereo card, and its label names an amateur photographer and the Amateur Photographic Exchange Club. Viewed through a stereoscope, the twin images give the snowy street a sense of depth.
