Camp Casey, the Union encampment shown here, sat near Bladensburg, a small town just northeast of Washington, D.C., in Prince George's County, Maryland. Lithographs like this one, printed in Baltimore by E. Sachse & Co., were among the most common ways Northern readers in 1861 and after saw the war's military sites, since photography was still hard to reproduce in newspapers. Because Bladensburg lay on the approaches to the capital, Union troops camped and drilled in the area to guard the city during the early months of the war. The print's color work and its attention to tents and fortifications make it a useful record of how the defense of Washington looked at the time.
