A pro-Southern crowd attacked the 6th Massachusetts on April 19, 1861, as the regiment marched between railroad stations on its way to Washington. The steel engraving by O. Pelton, after a design by William Momberger, depicts the chaotic street fighting that left soldiers and civilians dead. Known as the Pratt Street riot, the clash was one of the first bloody encounters of the Civil War, and it made Baltimore a symbol of the struggle over Maryland's loyalty to the Union.
