Steel engraver S. Fisher translated a drawing by William Henry Bartlett into this view of Baltimore, one of the many American scenes gathered in Nathaniel Parker Willis's *American Scenery*. Bartlett traveled widely through the United States and Canada in the 1830s, sketching towns, rivers, and coastlines for engravers working in London, where the plates were assembled into a lavishly illustrated book. Steel plates held fine detail and could yield many clean impressions, which suited the travel views that were popular with readers of the period. Prints like this one presented a growing port city as both commercially busy and picturesque.
