Few views in the Detroit Publishing Company's catalog pair a military landmark with working boats quite like this one. Fort McHenry, the star-shaped brick fort guarding the entrance to Baltimore's harbor, is best known as the place where Francis Scott Key watched the bombardment during the War of 1812 and was inspired to write what became "The Star-Spangled Banner." Here the fort sits quietly at day's end while fishing boats cross the water, and the sunset light rests on the harbor. The photograph dates to about 1906 and was copyrighted by the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many scenic views of American cities and landscapes for sale to tourists.
