Rather than a scene or a portrait, this is a title page, and the page is itself a lithograph, so it shows the process the book describes. Charles Joseph Hullmandel, a London printer, published *The Art of Drawing on Stone* in 1824 to explain how images could be drawn with greasy crayon on limestone and printed on paper. Alois Senefelder had invented lithography in Bavaria around 1796, and Hullmandel did much to establish the technique in England, especially through his work on tinted and color printing. The title page makes a fitting introduction to a manual written by a practitioner who was teaching others to use the medium.
