Competition entry no. 1026 is a color drawing in mixed media on paper, mounted on board, made in 1980 or 1981 while the design contest for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was underway. The winning design, by Maya Lin, was a pair of black granite walls meeting in a shallow V and inscribed with the names of more than 58,000 Americans killed or missing in the war. The memorial was dedicated in 1982, and its abstract, name-centered form helped a divided nation begin to reckon with the conflict. The "wall" has since become a reference point for memorial design.
