A seated draftsman copies a lute through a gridded frame in this 1525 woodcut, one of the illustrations in Albrecht Dürer's *Underweysung der Messung* (*Instruction in Measurement*). The book, printed in Nuremberg, was among the first in German on geometry and perspective, written so that painters, goldsmiths, and other craftsmen could learn to construct accurate images without relying on intuition alone. The lute stands in for the everyday object a artist might be asked to render, and the device shows how a grid could translate a three-dimensional form onto a flat sheet. Dürer's method here reflects the Renaissance interest in mathematics as a foundation for art.
