Three movie houses share one sheet in this ink drawing: the Palace, the National, and the Columbia, all on Monroe Street in Detroit. Drawn around 1930, it belongs to the Library of Congress's architecture, design and engineering drawings, so it was probably meant as a practical record of the buildings rather than an artistic view. Detroit's downtown saw a wave of theater construction in the 1920s as movies drew large crowds, and placing three neighboring houses together shows how closely they competed for the same audience. The street-level arrangement and facades are worth studying for clues to how the district looked at the time.
