This ink drawing records the RKO Palace theater on West Michigan Street in South Bend, Indiana, set directly across from the Granada theater. Dated 1934, it belongs to the Library of Congress's architectural and engineering drawings, working documents that builders and contractors used to plan and construct buildings. The 1930s were the peak years of the American movie palace, when chains such as RKO drew audiences with elaborate facades and the newly popular sound pictures. A drawing like this shows the design intentions behind a building that once anchored a busy downtown block.
