The subject here is a street rather than a single building: an ink drawing of three theaters lined up along Monroe Street in Detroit, the Palace, the National, and the Columbia. Dated to about 1930, it comes from the Library of Congress's architectural and engineering drawings collection. Those years were the high point of the downtown movie palace, when large auditoriums drew crowds in the evenings and gave busy commercial streets much of their character. Set side by side, the three facades show how theater builders competed for attention on a single block, with signage, entrances, and decorative detail meant to pull passersby inside.
