Few buildings on Broadway in Detroit's theater district drew more attention than the Capitol, and this ink drawing records its street-side setting near Park Street. Drawn in 1938, during the years when federal projects were documenting older American buildings, it shows the theater as an architectural record rather than an advertisement. Detroit's Broadway ran through the entertainment blocks around Grand Circus Park, where movie palaces and vaudeville houses competed for crowds in the 1920s and 1930s. Looking closely at the line work reveals how the architect planned the facade, entrances and signage to pull pedestrians off the sidewalk.
