The Broadway Strand drawing shows a movie theater on Broadway near Gratiot Street in downtown Detroit, rendered in ink on paper in 1931. Its location placed it in the city's Broadway theater district, where several large houses drew crowds during the years when motion pictures had become the dominant form of popular entertainment. Drawings like this one, made for architectural and engineering records, preserve the facade and layout of a building at a time when many such houses were altered, renamed, or demolished. Looking closely at the linework shows how architects planned a theater's street presence and its public entrance.
