This ink drawing shows the Orpheum theater at the corner of Lafayette Boulevard and Shelby Street in Detroit, a specific downtown site rather than a general view of a theater. The Orpheum name linked the house to the vaudeville circuit of the period, and during the 1920s Detroit's theater district grew quickly as live-performance halls and movie palaces were built for a fast-growing city. As an architectural and engineering drawing, the sheet records how the building was planned on paper, which makes it especially useful for studying its street-front design.
