The most distinctive detail here is the site itself: the Gayety theater stood at the corner of Cadillac Square and Bates Street in downtown Detroit. This 1923 ink drawing records the building as an architectural plan, the kind of document used to plan construction and guide builders. The Gayety was a burlesque house, a form of popular variety entertainment that drew large crowds in American cities in the early twentieth century. Cadillac Square was the city's central public space, named for Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, who founded Detroit in 1701, so the theater sat in the heart of the downtown entertainment district.
