This drawing shows three theaters side by side on Monroe Street in Detroit: the Palace, the National, and the Columbia. Putting them on one sheet suggests the street was a concentrated entertainment district, where a visitor could choose among stage shows and motion pictures within a short walk. Detroit's downtown theaters multiplied in the 1920s as movies drew large crowds and as vaudeville and film palaces competed for audiences. Ink drawings like this one, made around 1930, record how such buildings were designed and presented to the public before many of them changed hands or were altered.
