Few pictures on this board show the working side of a building, but this ink drawing records the Erlanger theater on North Clark Street, directly across from Chicago's City Hall, as it was renamed the Palace Music Hall. The Erlanger was named for Abraham Erlanger, a New York theatrical producer whose name stood for a large network of stage productions in the early 1900s. By the 1920s, many downtown Chicago playhouses were converting to motion pictures and vaudeville, and the drawing's subject headings reflect that shift toward film houses. Its 1927 date and technical character make it useful to architectural historians tracing how these theaters were planned and adapted.
