Few theater drawings from the 1920s name their building as plainly as this one, which records George M. Cohan's Grand Opera House on North Clark Street, directly across from Chicago's City Hall. The sheet is an ink drawing dated 1924, and its catalog subjects also include motion picture theaters, a reminder that many of the city's stage houses were being adapted for film during those years. Cohan, the Broadway playwright, composer and performer, lent the house his name and much of its drawing power. Architectural drawings like this one show how such buildings were planned, laid out and reworked for changing audiences.
