Ford's Grand Opera House on South Eutaw Street stood directly across from the Palace theater, and this 1921 ink drawing records its street-facing elevation at a time when the two houses shared a busy stretch of downtown Baltimore. The drawing is part of the Library of Congress's Architecture, Design and Engineering collection, which gathered drawings of American buildings for study and record. Its subject headings also note motion picture use, a reminder that many older opera houses of the 1920s were adapted for film as silent pictures grew in popularity. Pen-and-ink renderings like this one show how architects and owners presented a building's facade to the street.
