This 1928 ink drawing shows the Barrott Central theater, also known as the Whitney Opera House, set beside the Chicago Musical College building on East Van Buren Street near Michigan Avenue. Placing a theater and a music school on one block suggests how closely entertainment and music education were tied together in Chicago's Loop during the 1920s. Architectural drawings like this one record the planning stage of a building, when its street frontage and interior layout were settled. The decade was a busy one for theaters and opera houses in the city, and this sheet preserves a moment in that building boom.
