Few theater drawings from this period name a building as specifically as this one: the Studebaker theater and Playhouse, housed in the Studebaker Building on South Michigan Avenue near East Van Buren Street. The Studebaker name tied the site to the South Side wagon and automobile manufacturer whose Chicago presence made the block a recognizable address. By 1929, Chicago's downtown theaters were adapting to the rise of motion pictures, and drawings like this one record how older legitimate-theater spaces were planned, reworked, or documented during that shift. The ink-on-paper sheet is a useful document of the building's working layout as much as its appearance.
