This ink drawing shows a theater on South State Street near East Van Buren Street, in the Loop, where the 1920s brought a boom in large movie houses that combined film with stage entertainment. Architectural drawings like this one were the working documents that guided a building's construction, so they record the plan, massing and details the architects intended rather than how the finished house looked. Chicago's theater district was among the busiest in the country during these years, and the State Street houses drew crowds from across the city. Looking closely at the linework shows how much precision went into translating an architect's ideas into a building that could seat a large audience.
