Sharing a single lot, a playhouse and a hotel rose together on North Clark Street in this 1926 ink drawing of the Adelphia theater and Hotel Planter, which sets it apart from the other theater plans on this board. The building later carried the names New Gayety and Columbia, a reminder of how Chicago houses changed hands and programming through the decade. In the 1920s the Loop was crowded with vaudeville, legitimate and motion picture houses, and developers often stacked hotel rooms above or beside a theater to make the most of a costly site. Drawings like this were working documents, and the careful linework shows how the two uses were planned to fit together.
