The Haymarket theater stood on West Madison Street near North Halsted Street, on Chicago's Near West Side, and this ink drawing records it in 1928, the same decade that movie palaces were spreading across the city. The name recalled the Haymarket, the old produce and meat market district where the 1886 labor rally and bombing took place. The drawing belongs to the Architecture, Decorative and Engineering collection, so its linework is meant to document the building's design and plan rather than to serve as a pictorial view. It is a useful record of how neighborhood theaters of the period were laid out for both live performance and film.
