This ink drawing records a building that housed two entertainment venues at the busy corner of North Halsted and West Madison streets in Chicago: the Academy of Music and the Star & Garter theater, later known as the Columbia Burlesque house. Made in 1928, it is one of the Library of Congress's architectural and engineering drawings of Chicago theaters from the 1920s, a decade when movie palaces and vaudeville and burlesque houses were transforming the city's entertainment districts. The drawing's subject headings also tie it to the rise of motion picture theaters, so it captures a building caught between older stage traditions and the new film era.
