The Roosevelt theater, shown in this 1926 ink drawing, stood on State Street near Randolph, one of the busiest blocks in Chicago's Loop. The name likely honors Theodore Roosevelt, who had died only seven years earlier, though the record does not say so. During the 1920s the Loop filled with movie houses and vaudeville palaces, and State Street became their showcase, so drawings like this one capture a period of rapid change in the city's entertainment district. The sheet belongs to the Library of Congress's Architecture, Design and Engineering drawings, which preserve such plans for researchers.
