Few stretches of Chicago packed in as much entertainment as Randolph Street did in the 1920s, and this ink drawing shows one block of it, where a theater and a Masonic temple were planned side by side between State and Dearborn streets. Architectural drawings like this were working documents that guided construction, so the careful linework shows how a mixed-use building of lodge rooms, offices and a movie house was meant to rise in the Loop. Projects like this reflected the decade's appetite for both skyscrapers and picture palaces, and the drawing captures a time when downtown Chicago was growing upward as well as outward.
