Jennie Yeamans, the American comic actress and singer, is the figure at the center of this tall color lithograph, which was printed in 1887 by the Forbes Company of Boston and New York to advertise her stage work. The poster's subjects, flowers and bamboo, suggest the decorative, Japanese-inspired style that was fashionable in Western art and theater during the 1880s. Yeamans, who was born in 1862 and died in 1906, built a career on light musical comedy and burlesque, and posters like this one were a standard way for touring performers to draw audiences into the house.
