The poster centers on Jane Coombs, an actress born in 1842, who is billed in this black-and-white lithograph for a production of Richard Brinsley Sheridan's comedy *The School for Scandal*. Sheridan wrote the play in 1777, and it remained a staple of the stage for generations, prized for its witty dialogue and its satire of gossip and reputation. The sheet was drawn by R. Muller and printed by the Metropolitan Lithographic Studio at 29 Warren Street in New York in 1879, with J.E. Jackson named as the agent who arranged its circulation. Its large size and bold lettering reflect how theatrical advertising was designed to catch the eye on city walls.
