Frozen spray built a mound of ice at the foot of the American Fall, and a bridge of ice spanned the gorge below, both features that drew winter crowds to Niagara. George Barker, a Niagara Falls photographer, labeled this view "Instantaneous," a reference to the short exposure time that newer dry-plate methods made possible by the early 1880s. Freezing over the falls was a recurring sight in the region, and the ice bridge in particular was a popular attraction that people walked across until it weakened and broke up.
