The American Fall, the smaller of the two cataracts that make up Niagara Falls on the New York side of the Niagara River, is seen here from the foot of the stair case, the vantage point that let visitors stand close to the base of the water. Viewing spots like this one drew tourists throughout the 19th century, when the falls had become one of the most famous natural sights in North America. The record gives no date, and it is linked to a shelflist card bearing the name Hill, so the print's maker and exact origin remain unconfirmed, but the view reflects the era when visitors came to the gorge in growing numbers.
