Viewed from the foot of the staircase, this print shows the American Fall, the smaller and western of the two main cataracts at Niagara Falls on the border between New York and Ontario. Its vantage point places the viewer close to the base of the cliff, where spray and the roar of falling water were most intense, a perspective many nineteenth-century visitors sought out. The record gives no date, and the shelflist card is marked as unverified and associated with a name, Hill, so the maker and time of creation remain uncertain. Still, the subject alone reflects the falls' long appeal as a natural wonder that drew travelers, painters and photographers for generations.
