Few places at Niagara drew early visitors like Goat Island, the wooded islet that divides the cataract, and this print shows the American Fall as seen from its shore. Painted and engraved by W.J. Bennett and printed by J. Neale, it was issued in New York by Henry J. Megarey in 1829 and dedicated to Thomas Dixon, Esq. Colored aquatints like this gave viewers who would never make the trip a sense of the falls' scale and spray, at a time when Niagara was becoming a major destination for travelers. The coloring and the careful rendering of the rushing water are worth a close look.
