This view looks across the American Fall from Goat Island, with the Upper Steel Arch Bridge spanning the river above the falls. It is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland that reproduced photographs using several lithographic stones, and it was made by the Detroit Photographic Company, which held American rights to the process. The company assembled albums of these views as a catalog for its office, so the print reflects a commercial purpose as well as a picture of the scenery. The bridge's presence gives it a record of how the falls were being developed for visitors around 1898.
