This view of the British Fall, the horseshoe-shaped cataract on the Canadian side, was made from Goat Island, the wooded island that divides the river's drop between the American and Canadian sides. The print is inscribed to Thomas Dixon, esq., a dedication typical of nineteenth-century views that were often presented to friends or patrons. The record gives no date, and the shelflist card's link to a name, Bennett, is unverified, so the maker and year remain uncertain. Goat Island drew many visitors through the 1800s, which makes such views useful for seeing how the falls were pictured and shared in that period.
