The Horseshoe, or British Fall, is the larger of the two cataracts at Niagara, and this print shows its face as seen from beneath the Table Rock, the ledge on the Canadian side that let visitors stand almost at the foot of the water. Viewed from that low angle, the sheer mass of falling water and the rising spray become the real subject. The record does not give a date or a photographer's name beyond a shelflist card associated with the name Hill, so the exact year is uncertain. Views like this were popular with nineteenth-century travelers, who came to Niagara expecting the sublime and found a site that was already a major tourist destination.
