Seen from Table Rock, the ledge on the Canadian side that overhung the gorge, this lithograph focuses on the American Falls, the smaller cataract on the New York side of the river. August Köllner drew the view from nature, Deroy transferred it to stone, and Cattier printed it for Goupil, Vibert & Co., the New York and Paris publishers behind the *Views of American Cities* series issued around 1849 to 1851. Table Rock was a popular vantage point for nineteenth-century travelers, and much of it fell into the gorge in 1850, so the sheet preserves a viewpoint that changed soon after it was drawn.
