This color aquatint shows the American Fall as seen from Goat Island, the wooded island that splits the cataract between the American and Canadian sides. It is dedicated to Thomas Dixon and was painted and engraved by W.J. Bennett, with printing credited to J. Neale and publication attributed to Henry J. Megarey in New York, around 1829. By the late 1820s, Goat Island had become a favorite vantage point for sightseers, who came to the falls in growing numbers after the earlier footbridges opened access to it. Views like this one helped shape how Americans pictured Niagara as a national wonder, and the dedication to a private patron shows how such prints circulated among travelers and collectors.
