Few views of Niagara from the 1870s show visitors as close to the water as this wood engraving, which depicts the descent to the Cave of the Winds at the foot of the American Falls on Goat Island. The scene was published in Harper's Weekly on September 11, 1875, across two pages, and it pairs the title's three vantage points, the brink of the falls, the American Shoe, and the stairway path, into a single sequence. Wood engravings like this one carried the wonder of the cataract to readers who would never make the trip themselves, and the tourists shown picking their way down the wet rock give a sense of how much effort such a visit demanded.
