Goat Island, the wooded island that splits the Niagara River at the brink of the falls, gave visitors a view that few other spots on the gorge could match. This hand-colored lithograph, published by Currier & Ives in New York sometime between 1856 and 1873, shows the cataract as tourists of the mid-nineteenth century would have seen it from the island's paths. Currier & Ives made their prints affordable and widely sold, so pictures like this one carried the falls into parlors across the country long before most Americans made the trip north. The image is catalogued in the firm's raisonné, which helps date and identify the many views the company produced of this famous site.
