From Goat Island, the wooded island that divides Niagara Falls between the American Fall and the Horseshoe Fall, this view looks out over the rushing water and the broad curve of the cataract. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold inexpensive colored prints to a wide middle-class market, published many Niagara scenes, and this one dates from between 1856 and 1873, when the falls had become one of the most visited sights in the country. Visitors reached Goat Island by footbridges, so the print shows a vantage that many travelers sought out. Because the color was added by hand after printing, the greens and whites of the spray vary from one copy to another.
