Seen from the foot of a staircase, the American Fall rises above the rocks in this view, placing the viewer near the water's edge. The American Fall lies on the New York side of the river and is the smaller of the two cataracts that share the gorge with the Horseshoe Fall in Canada. Stairways cut into the gorge walls let sightseers descend to the base of the cliffs, where spray and roar were part of the experience. The record gives no date, and a shelflist card links the print to a name, Hill, though that association is unverified.
