The American Fall, the smaller of the two cataracts that make up Niagara Falls, is the subject here, seen from the foot of the incline that carried visitors down the gorge wall to the water's edge. Such inclines, built in the late nineteenth century, let tourists reach the base of the falls without the long climb down the rock, and the view from below showed the sheer drop and the spray rising off the rocks at the cliff's foot. The American Fall lies on the New York side of the river, and it was the New York State Reservation at Niagara, established in 1885, that opened this land to public visitors and kept it free of commercial development.
