Winter ice piled up at the foot of American Fall, the smaller cataract on the New York side, in this view by George Barker, whose title notes an instantaneous exposure. Ice bridges formed when spray and floating ice jammed the gorge below the falls, sometimes linking the shores and drawing visitors onto the frozen river. The word "instantaneous" points to a fast shutter, a technical achievement in the early 1880s that let photographers catch moving water and ice rather than the blur of longer exposures. Barker's Niagara views were popular souvenirs of the period.
