Taken from beneath the cliff rather than from the familiar upper overlook, this close-up puts the viewer at the foot of the falls, where water strikes rock and spray hangs in the air. George Barker, a photographer known for many Niagara views, made the print around 1886, when the falls drew steady crowds of sightseers eager to see the cataract from every angle. Views like this one were sold to travelers as souvenirs and helped shape how the public pictured the falls. The image also records how visitors in the 1880s reached the lower gorge, by stairs, paths and boats.
